PIPA And SOPA Stalled by US Congress In the Backdrop Of Historic Online Protests

The anti-activists of SOPA and PIPA anti–piracy bills has showcased their strength and might through online protests that prompted the US Congress to stall their proposed call a vote on Protect IP Act on January 24th. Some of the leading online websites like Reddit, Craigslist and Wikipedia participated in a 24 hour black out of these websites in protest against the anti-piracy bills of the US Congress. This is considered to be one of the largest online protests against it and over 13 million people is said to have taken time of their busy schedule to vouch their support against the anti-piracy bills that was to be called for vote in the US Congress. All these people want the internet to be totally free from any kind of censorship.

PIPA And SOPA Stalled by US Congress In the Backdrop Of Historic Online Protests

The magnitude of the online protests has taken many people including the MPAA Chairman Chris Dodd by surprise. The Senate’s majority leader Harry Reid announcing the postponement of the vote on PIPA said that the decision was taken in the wake of the recent protests taken against them by various popular American internet companies. The Republican chairman of the House Judiciary committee, Lamar Smith, also announced that there will be a delay in the action against the Stop Online Piracy Act, SOPA for a certain period until some wider agreement is reached on the anti-piracy bill.

The massive online support against the anti-piracy bills has not only stunned United States Government but has also showed the people’s love for the internet to the entire world. The fight for freedom by many American internet companies has showed many companies all over the world the importance of voicing their views to the government and the need to fight for their rights. The writers, regular internet users, editors, writers, etc. have been the people who have supported the black out announced by Wikipedia, Reddit, Craigslist and Google. The people have joined hands unanimously in support of their free expression on internet and do not want the congress to destroy the open and free sharing of information through the internet. But, many analysts feel that the struggle against PIPA and SOPA has just started and the corporate behind the copyright lobby will not let it to die off that easily. The Congress now is compelled to redraft a legislation that will be favorable for the internet companies and will not be biased towards the corporate lobbyists.
